I firmly believe that words have more power than we often
give credit for.
Words are powerful. That is one of the most profound truths
that I have learned in life, especially since I have had experience with living
in a residence hall where everyone appears to butt into your conversations with
others, and almost nothing appears to be private information.
Regardless of your level of education, your cultural
background, your religion, or your gender identity and expression, this is a
fundamental truth that all of us can agree with.
Imagine if
you will that you are meeting someone for the first time! The person can be an
interviewer, a new professor, or a complete stranger.
It is true that most of our communication is nonverbal, but
please do not underestimate the verbal element of communication! The words you use
during your face-to-face interactions as well as your written means of
communication such as emails, texts, social networking platforms, ETC. will
make or break relationships with important people in your life.
Choose your
words wisely! You never know what sort of influence you may have in another
person’s life. You may forget what you have said last week, six months ago, or
even last year, but others will not. The words that come from your mouth or
fingertips can be the difference between a lifelong friendship or a fall from
grace that takes weeks, months, or sometimes years to recover from. Be careful
out there! Remember that the world is a fascinating but dangerous place.
